There comes a time in every woman’s life when something happens that she is so excited about she can hardly contain herself – whether that be a pair of new designer shoes, a trip abroad or a new love interest. But when you’re a natural hair blogger, that might simply be the case when you get featured on THEE biggest online natural hair publication. This is exactly the case right now and yes, I’m practically screaming as I’m typing this.
Along with my curlfriend Cape Town Curly, I’ve been featured on the front page of naturallycurly.com in an article entitled: What it’s like to have natural hair in South Africa.
Now you may wonder to yourself, “What’s the big deal? It’s a just a photo.” But in all honestly, it’s not just a photo. It represents so much more to me than that. I’ve been blogging about natural hair for four years now, and since the very beginning it’s been about documenting my own journey just as much as it’s been about helping others to embrace themselves fully by learning to love and care for their natural hair. So it’s never been about the “exposure” or the publicity. But I admit that you do reach a point where you realise that yes, the publicity does help you to reach a wider audience and to get your message of self-love and acceptance across. So for a publication like naturallycurly.com to pick up on it means the world to me because it actually solidifies that I’m able to have even more of an influence.
And then of course there’s the beauty that is @capetowncurly herself. She’s one of the hardest working South African natural hair bloggers I know of. We’ve been featuring each other on our respective blogs and social media more times than I can count and we are officially colleagues as well, in that we work together in our collective, Cape Town Naturally and organise the annual Cape Town Natural Hair Fest along with our 3 fellow colleagues. You can find out more about the Cape Town Natural Hair Fest here and here, as well as some of the other work we do over here.
But my point is that sometimes you just find someone that you click with and with whom working together comes so easily it’s actually a breeze. The fact you can also be really good friends is of course a complete bonus! And I’ll take that every day. So when you not only work together as well as we do, but also achieve great heights together such as this one here, you actually can’t ask for anything more. As Amanda has been saying since we excitedly found out about this feature this morning, “We’ll be #queening for the rest of the day!” Yasss!
