HOW TO STYLE AN ANIMAL PRINT SKIRT

One of this season’s hottest trends is the animal print skirt, which can come in various prints: leopard print, zebra print, snake print, cow print, the options seems to be endless. It can be quite a dramatic, bold look and you might find yourself drawn to it, even if you’re not necessarily sure how to wear it.

At this point you’ll have to excuse my use of the greatly overused blogger word, but I’ve realised that I am now completely and utterly “obsessed” with animal print. I’ve mentioned before on Instagram that I’m not a massive shopper by any stretch of the imagination, but yet I find myself having purchased at least 3 animal print skirts this year alone. Have a look at this post to see one of my other ones. It’s not a lot, but for someone who largely tries to buy classic items to be worn repeatedly, I’m still not sure how I got myself into this situation!

Nevertheless, if you’re new to animal print, here are three ways to gently ease you into this trend, all incorporated into this one outfit. I’m showing you how to do it with a tiger print wrap skirt, but it’s applicable to all animal prints.

WEAR IT WITH NEUTRALS

It can be quite daunting to step into animal print for the first time, so one way to ensure you get it right is to pair it with other neutral pieces. In this case I paired it with a black off-the-shoulder blouse to create a cohesive look. I could easily have paired it with a white, beige, or even navy blue shirt and the look would still have worked because the shades are all neutral. The beauty of the neutral pieces is that it works to balance the wild print, making it look sophisticated and elegant.

MAKE IT YOUR ACCENT PIECE

Ensure that you’re not wearing any other items that will compete for its attention. In other words, make it the absolute focus. Initially I was concerned that the off-the-shoulder blouse would be too much for the skirt, but I soon realised that it’s actually complimenting it. If I had worn the same blouse in neon pink or green, or if wore a shirt with polka dots all over it, then I’d definitely be taking attention away from the skirt, but by pairing it with the black blouse, it’s still my accent piece.

Animal print can already be quite dramatic, but if you make it your statement item and let everything else compliment it, you’ll pull it off effortlessly.

WEAR IT WITH HEELS TO ELEVATE THE LOOK

I’m not going to lie: I think an animal print look is pretty sexy by itself and you only need a simple black heel to elevate it slightly. There’s no need for any other type of dramatic shoe as you definitely want to go for a “less-is-more” approach with this look. What I like about this approach is that you easily achieve a chic, stylish look.
