It’s wedding season here in the UK, and along with the easing of lockdown more of us are receiving wedding invitations as well as invites to other special occasions. We’ve really missed out on family and friend gatherings over the last year and a half so to be honest, it was lovely to receive requests over Instagram for some wedding guest and special occasion looks. It seems like many of us still feel really comfortable with more of a dress-down approach – a result of spending such a long time in lockdown – however many of us are also keen to return to dressing up for events and that includes long, flowy dresses with heels, and in some cases hats and even fascinators.
Below I’ve rounded up a selection of 5 dresses that are ideal to wear as a wedding guest as well to any other special occasion. You’ll be happy to know that they are all suitable for petites. I’m 5’1 / 1.56 metres for reference.

DRESS 1: THE HAND-PAINTED PRINT DRESS
This stunning aquamarine and ivory midi-dress features a hand-painted print and is just perfect for sun-soaked occasions. It has a beautiful broderie anglaise texture throughout. I love the beautiful effortless silhouette and the waist tie detail that adds definition to the figure. For accessories I’ve selected an ivory pair of mules as well as an ivory clutch bag.

DRESS 2: THE FLORAL MINI
This mini-dress from HM is just the ideal one to wear on a scorcher of a Summer’s day. It’s made from a Tencel™ lyocell and linen blend. It features a double-layered top with shaped cups and support panels front and back with narrow, adjustable shoulder straps and a sweetheart neckline. I adore the pink floral print set against the brown base. A basket bag and a low heel complete the look. For cooler evenings feel free to drape a blazer around the shoulders.
DRESS 3: THE GINGHAM MIDI
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that gingham is pretty much considered a classic print and makes an appearance every Summer. In fact, it’s particularly popular this year, so if you’re looking for an on-trend print to wear, gingham is the one. Here I’m wearing a light-green, wrap-style gingham midi-dress. It features a V neckline, short puff sleeves, and a tiered hem. It’s made from a seersucker fabric with a fit-and flare design which is complimentary to almost any figure. The ultimate Summertime bag, the basket bag and a pair of beige mules, complete this look.

DRESS 4: THE YELLOW MAXI-DRESS
Can you imagine making an appearance at a special event in this dress? There are just so many things I love about it: the bright yellow colour, the full maxi length, the lightness of the fabric, the white floral print as well as the collar design. Honestly, what’s not to love about it? I’ve completed the look with a pair of gold, strappy sandals and my trustee ivory clutch bag.
DRESS 5: THE BACKLESS SUN-DRESS
This is the second time I’m featuring this stunner of a dress on the blog in a very short time! The first time I wrote about it I included it in my Mini Zara Haul post, which you can read about here. This time I’m highlighting it as an absolute must for a special occasion. It has a V-neck with gathered detail at the front, and thin straps that cross at the back. It’s ecru in colour with the daintiest pale pink flower print on it and I honestly can’t get enought of it. If only the UK had had a more decent Summer this year, I would have received a lot more wear out of it, but alas, there’s always next year as I’m definitely holding on to this one.
