WHAT IS PERSONAL STYLE?

Personal style is a unique way of expressing yourself through your clothing, accessories, and other items. It’s a way of presenting your personality to the world, without saying a word. Personal style can be influenced by many factors such as your cultural background, your upbringing, your personal interests, and your lifestyle. It’s a reflection of who you are, and it’s constantly evolving. At the end of the day it’s deeply personal, so it’s important to reflect and really think about what you want to communicate to the world.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO DEVELOP YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?

  1. It gives you a sense of identity – you don’t just want to be a copy of someone else. To know exactly who you are in this world is going to give your confidence so that you can go out boldly into the world and be your true authentic self.
  2. It’s going to save you time. If you know what how and what you like to wear, getting dressed everyday will be easer and save you the hassle of always thinking “I have nothing to wear!”
  3. It will save you money. If you know your personal style deeply, you wont simply be tempted to buy an item just because it’s on sale or just because it’s a new trend item.

HOW TO FIND YOUR PERSONAL STYLE

A. The best way to find your personal style is to look at your current wardrobe and to figure out how it makes you feel. Consider the following questions:

  1. How do your clothes make you feel?
  2. Which are your go-to items? Ie. Which are the ones you reach for first?
  3. What are you favourite items and why?
  4. Which items are your least favourite and why?
  5. How easily are you able to put an outfit together from your existing pieces?
  6. Are you hanging onto items that you don’t fit you particularly well or that don’t make you feel good?

So it’s important to assess where you currently are and from there you’ll be able to figure out what needs attention.

B. Create a moodboard.

Find outfits and looks that inspire you, for how you would like to look and feel. For example, if you realised in point A that you like blazers, start pinning images with blazers. From here, look at the specific colours of the blazers you’re drawn to. Look at the silhouette. Are they more fitted or oversized?

Look at your favourite influencers and the way they style their outfits, or the particular piece that you’re interested in. Look at your favourite brands and how they style their pieces.  You can also look at your favourite celebrities.

Some of my favourite retailers and brands include Sézane, Boden and  Karen Millen.

Also think of your lifestyle and personality. Don’t pin anything that won’t fit into current lifestyle. For example, think about your occupation, your daily life and the climate of the area you live in. If you’re a stay-at-home mum, heels may not be the best option. Similarly, if you work in corporate finance, then ripped jeans and a band t-shirt might be best left for the weekend.

C. Sum up your style

Here you are you’re going to determine what you’d like your overall style to be, based on everything you’ve pinned.  So start thinking about specific words to describe your style eg, feminine, classic, trendy, boho, vintage?

What are your favourite silhouettes? Skinny or straight jeans? Oversized or fitted blazers?

Do you prefer neutrals or bright colours?

What types or fabric are you drawn to?

Do you like to style your outfits with lots of jewellery or minimal jewellery? Do you wear belts, hats, scarves?

D. Now it’s time to name your style.

Decide on 3 words to describe your style.

Mine are: chic, feminine, comfortable.

Here are a few words that can help you thinking in the right direction:  bright, romantic, sporty, punk, grunge, sexy, playful, colourful, simple, hippy, preppy. These are just a few words, so I recommend really analysing which words accurately describe your style.

These words will help you stay focused when it comes to getting dressed and purchasing new clothes.

This is the beauty of discovering your personal style because you are able to hone in on what makes you uniquely you, and no one can take that away from you!
