Even though I don’t actually work in an office anymore, I know that finding a balance between looking professional and stylish can be tricky. From my days working in Public Relations in Cape Town, I was always very acutely aware that I wanted to convey a competent and business-like vibe, but I certainly didn’t want to look drab or frumpy. My sense of personal style has always been very important to me.

And depending on the type of office you work in, the level to which you embrace that business-look can vary greatly! For example, some office environments are extremely corporate and you’d have to dress the part, while at others a business-casual dress-code would be more acceptable.

Below I’m sharing some simple styling ideas along with outfits to inspire your next office look. Feel free to click through on each of the pictures and graphics, and browse/shop if you see anything that could help you to build your workwear wardrobe. All these outfits should help to keep you cool yet comfortable during the Summer, and I’ve include some blazers and cardigans as well because we all know how cold it can get in some offices once they crank up the air-conditioning.

Be sure to adapt any of these looks to suit YOUR personal style as it’s always important to make the looks work for you and that you feel comfortable and confident in them. But if you’d like to copy them outright, that’s okay too!

1| Shirt Dress and Slingback Shoes

A simple shirtdress can be worn with a nice pair of slingback shoes to create an effortless outfit that is still professional enough for just about any office environment. With a shirt dress outfit, you will be able to transition  easily from the office to the bar, dinner, or anything else you may have on after work. Slingbacks are a wonderful option for workwear shoes because they look polished, they’re comfortable, and stay on your feet easily.

2| Tailored Trousers, Shirt and Blazer

Tailored/wide-leg trousers and a shirt is one of those classic outfit combinations that will keep you cool throughout the day, without feeling like you are showing too much skin. The blazer provides just the right amount of polish to the look while the ballet flats prevents the outfit from becoming overdressed.

3| Trousers, Waistcoat and Blazer

The waistcoat brings a modern edge to your tailored trousers and is a great switch-up for a blouse or shirt. You could also layer it over a shirt or blouse, or simply wear it under a blazer, making it a great layering piece.

I’ve included an additional 15 black waistcoats below for you to have even more to choose from.

4| Pencil Skirt and Blouse

A pencil skirt and blouse will forever be that classic corporate look and to be honest I quite love it. Sometimes I wish I still worked in an office to be able to pull off this timeless look regularly. But alas, I’ll leave you to be inspired by these beautiful pieces and of course if there’s a chill in the air, it’s nothing that can’t be solved with a simple cardigan.

5| Cardigan, White Trousers and Trench Coat

This is a look I love so much: the structured boxy cardigan against the flowyness of the trousers provides a beautiful feminine touch to the workwear look, while still being ever so comfortable. As we live in the UK, we know that the rain is never that far away, so a trench coat is a good option to have on hand.
